I''ve been fermenting quite a bit. I have had failures with water-airlocks, but never a failed ferment with these. Not to say it can''t happen, but if you pick your produce well and chemical-free, no-wax, and if you sanitize your jar, weight and top, these tops clearly minimize chances for failed fermentation.

Pros: Easiest to use, easiest to clean, sturdy and flexible material, consistently great quality.

Cons: Really expensive for 4 slabs of silicone sold in a cheap plastic container.

Tip: I spray my jars, weights and lids and airlocks with 3% Hydrogen Peroxide to sanitize them. Mist them all over and let them sit in it for 15 to 20 seconds, then rinse in distilled or filtered water. Tap water can kill your ferment, folks! I''ve learned to make my brine in a big pyrex measuring bowl. I weigh 7 grams or one level teaspoon of kosher salt or pickling salt into each cup of filtered water. I make extra brine, usually a quart, because I''d rather have too much than too little brine. I layer my veggies, herbs & spices, leaving lots of room at the top of the jar! place my weight, then add the brine very slowly to cover it all! Pouring slowly pretty well stops air bubbles from getting trapped under the veggies. I only use plastic utensils to stir the brine, and I''m sure wood works too, but they tell us not to use metal in our ferment because metal has antibacterial qualities. It''s fine to use a metal Mason jar ring outside over the Pickle Pipes to hold them down.

I rarely ever write reviews, but I need to to warn Munich fellow fermenters!

I bought these for fermenting cabbage, to make sauerkraut. I was excited to not have to open up the jar everyday and using these pickle pipes for emitting the gasses out- however mold grew on top of all the cabbage I was fermenting!! I thought well maybe the first batch was my error, so I did a 2nd batch and same thing mold! This has never happened to me before until using these Pickle pipes!

This is sooooo sad bc it takes quite a bit of time to cut up the cabbage, salt the cabbage, crunch the cabbage to omit the juices and then put the cabbage into the glass jars-
So hours of hard work, literally down the drain! Actually I dumbed it all into my compost for my organic garden.

You can see in all my photos there is mold and you can’t just scoop the mold off the top, you have to throw it all away bc if the mold is on top, it’s also in it.

I think these pickle pipes might work if you are ONLY fermenting for 1 week- BUT with sauerkraut you have to ferment for 4-6 weeks for proper fermentation.

Use with caution!

What a fabulous idea and product, I’ve tried a lot of different methods to ferment veggies and the “Pickle Pipe” mason jar tops work great especially if you include the glass weights to keep the veggies submerged. I’m a retired microbiologist and after 30 years of various research fermentations believe in the KISS principle. That is “Keep It Simple Stupid,” these things are simple, quick and easy to use.They keep the head space anaerobic which helps prevent fungi from growing while releasing silent little fragrant fermentation farts.

I have made sauerkraut for many years but am always plagued by the jar overflowing getting all over the counter; and contents not fermenting and going bad. I used all sorts of products that claimed to help with fermenting issues. Nothing has worked until these little babies. They are great! I was completely surprised how easy they are to use, clean and the work perfectly. I just mixed up the cabbage with a little salt, put in a mason jar and screwed one of these little guys on. My cabbage fermented perfectly in about 1 week. No fuss, no mess. Can''t recommend these lids highly enough!

Well, they are simple to use and aren''t difficult to clean. However, if the liquid/brine is too high up the neck of the jar, the liquid is pushed into the vent when it starts to ferment. It''s taken me a few tries to figure out how to get the jar packed enough that it''s easy to get my glass weights out (that''s different product) but not so packed that the liquid gets into the vent of these lids and overflows. Also, the vent isn''t automatic. Or maybe I''m just not patient enough. I monitor the lids, and when I see it bulging upward, I squeeze the vents--which happens about 2 or 3 times a day. The lids do seem to keep outside air from getting in (except the original air present when I put the lids on). These are useful enough that I still use them, but I''m finding the glass weights would have worked fine on their own.

I''ll need to test these more, but so far I''ve had only so-so luck with ferments using these and it stinks to wait weeks only to have to throw a gallon of kraut out. Many ferments have gotten moldy (blue/green and unsafe) or the white kahm yeast (undesirable, but tolerable). I seem to have much better luck with the Easy Fermenter lids so far, which is a shame as these were cheaper and I really wanted to love these. I bought this set to have more lids as I expanded the number of batches I had going simultaneously. Batches using these lids are most likely to fail on me if I need to add more brine or open up to taste before deciding to continue fermenting. I am assuming this may be due to there being no way to remove the air inside after breaking the seal. I''ve had much better luck with these lids when I haven''t needed to open it up until the day it''s done and goes in the fridge. Realizing some of my actions have caused some ferments to be more likely to fail, generally I find ferments using these lids to be less forgiving than my other slightly more expensive lids with more features. YMMV

They''re far easier to manage than airlocks or remembering to burp sealed containers. You really can just put them in place and leave them to get on with it. The handy thing is that the regular size Pickle Pipes also fit the standard Kilner preserve jars, which are easy to find anywhere. I didn''t have any suitable weights to hand, so I cut discs out of a food-grade silicone sheet to sit on top of the vegetables and keep them submerged. Like all good designs, Pickle Pipes are so simple that you wonder why nobody thought of it before. They might seem expensive initially, but they''ll last for years, and you''ll get consistent results.

I don''t suppose there''s much room for error with these - they work exactly as I expected. I''m using them with Kilner jars and lid rings for which they are perfect. The one slight downside is if like me you refuse to buy purpose made weights (which aren''t particularly weighty) you might use something that physically pressed your ferment down into its fluid. If you have a solid lid that''s fine, but you don''t really want upward pressure against the silicone pickle pipe. Still, for small batch ferments they are my favourite option. Especially as once you''re done fermenting your batch just swap out the pickle pipe for your normal lid for storage. The concept is so very simple you really can''t go wrong. I love my solid one way valve lids, but if overnight the fluid level suddenly rises I''ve once had kimchi get stuck in the valve preventing pressure release - could have had an exploding jar! With these worst case scenario is your ferment could leak out the top.

The items looked just like I was expecting. I had seen them demonstrated on a YouTube channel about homesteading with Doug and Stacey. In the photo, I have got raw cabbage, onion, bell peppers, garlic and spices that I mashed repeatedly with the end of a rolling pin. This r mashing releases the juices from the vegetables and then the veggies are rammed into the mason jar, weighted down, and the pickle pipes fit inside the mason jar screw-top ring in place of the normal flat metal lid. These particular tops fit the wide mouth jars. The teat-like tops allows fermenting veggies to ''burp'' without you having to remember to keep opening up the standard lid to ''burp'' it, and potentially letting germs in. They stood up to me inserting them into boiling water to sterilise them before use. You can also put them in the dishwasher.
